Bible study on Romans – Chapter 12

Dear brothers and sisters,

In this bible study on the 12th chapter on the book of Romans we will go through this chapter as following:

  • A living sacrifice
  • Humble service in the Body of Christ
  • Love in action

A living sacrifice

This first paragraph deals with our own lives. It deals with how God wants us to be, but also how others will look at us. In this paragraph God tells us that we need to offer our own bodies as a living sacrifice. Our life and all that we do needs to be holy and pleasing to God. Therefore we need to change our life and actions and make sure that they are in accordance to God’s wishes. As soon as we (more and more) do so, than it will enable you not only to worship God by living a Godfearing life, but also it will make sure that you are able to test what God’s will is. This paragraph makes it very clear that we should never adjust our way of living to the world. Why not? Because they “will” of the world is contradicting God’s will. You could say that also in this instance you cannot serve to masters: both God and the world. You have to choose, because God leaves you no option!

Humble service in the Body of Christ

In this next paragraph God continues by teaching us more about how God wants us to be. First of all: be humble! It is so easy to think highly of yourself, but if you do than you won’t be pleasing God! Who are you to think more highly of yourself? Know that all your achievements are thanks to God and not thanks to yourself. That is also why God sent His only begotten Son to die on the cross to die for our sins! Because it is only by faith in God that we can achieve success(es). Ask and pray to God every day that He helps you to become and stay humble. Don’t let the world misguide you to think that that achievement was by your own doing!

Secondly, God tells us that we should never think that we can be Christians alone. No, God tells us in this paragraph that we are part of a body. This body has many members and all seperate members of this body have their own talents (from God) and together we function as a whole body. Ask God in prayer to guide you to know your own talents and use that / those talent(s) to honor God! If God gave you the talent to give, than give abundantly. If you have the talent of teaching, than teach!

Love in action

This last paragrah of Romans 12 is about love. First of all, don’t think to lightly about love, because it a very powerful thing. God tells you that your love must be sincere! This also means that you have to hate evil and stay with what is good. So make sure that you truly love others and be devoted in it. Also honor another above yourself. Why? Because you love yourself, so when you honor another person above yourself than you are giving that person real love.

Furthermore, regardless of what you are going through in life, make sure that are joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. You don’t get a day of. No God demands of you to be like this all the time! This paragraph demands a lot of you, but through it you will truly be a blessing to others. If God gives you an opportunity to share with people in need: do so! Always be hospitable and don’t hate but bless the ones that persecute you. Most of all, don’t persecute them back.

Make sure that you life in harmony and don’t be proud. Don’t consider yourself to be too good to hang around people with a lower social status. Remember that Jesus was a carpenter and not a earthly king. God did this for a reason, because He wants to let you know that you should never think low about someone, because you consider yourself better. Would you be willing to run the chance to have lived in the days of Jesus and rejected Him, because you thought that this carpenter son was not worthy of your attention? Although He is not here physically, know that He is still here with us in Spirit and He will judge your actions!

When someone hurts you, don’t retaliate, but leave it to God. Don’t focus yourself on the moment that that person will be served God’s wrath. That is something between God and that person. God will not like it when you are waiting for your enemy to be punished.

This chapter is ended by a very powerful sentence: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good”.

If you truly hate evil, than there is but one way to defeat it: by doing good!

Daily word for 29 February 2016 – Romans 12:17-19

Daily word for 29 February 2016 – Romans 12:17-19

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today I want to encourage you with the words from Romans 12:17-19 (NIV):

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”a says the Lord.

As Christians God expect us to be different and in this case also not seek always for revenge. He wants us (as far as possible) to live in peace with everyone. Although the world often finds it right to repay evil with evil, it is not considered right in the eyes of God.

Also trust on God to avenge for you.

God bless  you!
