Bible study on Acts of the Apostles – Chapter 12

Dear brothers and sisters,

In the Bible study on the 12th chapter of the Acts of the Apostles I will discuss:

  • Peter’s miraculous escape from prison
  • Herod’s death

Peter’s miraculous escape from prison

fc044ea390507df39b9bd57a16eabb2f

At this moment in time it was King Herod, which had arrested several persons belonging to God’s church, with the intend to persecute them. James, the brother of John, was already put to death by the sword. The most shocking thing is that King Herod decided to arrest Paul as well, not because of his own conviction in the matter, but because He saw that a part of the Jews were happy with the killing of James. This shows that we should always only rely on God in everything we do and not automatically expect that because someone calls himself (in Revelation they are called name-Christians) that He is actually a Christian in the sense that God considers someone to be a Christian.

His arrest took place during the Festival of Unleavened Bread, so after arresting Peter King Herod have him put in jail until Passover ended. Peter was sent to jail by four guards and during that time also guarded by four of them. At the moment of his imprisonment the church was praying for Paul. This shows that as soon as something is happening to on of our brothers and/or sisters, we should waste no time and start praying for them. If we do this than God will also here our prayers.

And indeed their faith was heard by God and He sent an angel to Paul. He woke Peter up and told Him to get dressed and get with him. It took Peter some time to understand what was happening, so the angel urged him to act immediately. This shows that when God Is busy in our life’s, that we should act immediately and not be hesitant. How often (also speaking for myself) do we have the tendency to first want to arrange and to do all sorts of other things, before doing that thing that God has asked us to do.

While walking out Peter was very amazed, because all guards were vast asleep. When the angel freed him, he went to the house of Mark. Exactly the house where everyone was that was praying for him. It is beautiful how God orchestrates things. They got to see the fruits of their prayer when Peter came in! At the same time the guards could not understand what had happened. See how God will confuse our enemies. Even it is seems that they have the upper hand and are on the point of defeating you, God will strike them a devastating blow. I pray that God will do the same for your and mine current enemies!

Herod’s death

stdas0377

Herod was so shocked by this news and ordered a thorough search for him, but he also was unable to find him. He also had the guards executed. After this Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there. First he had been quarrelling with people  of Tyre and Sidon. They joined together to get an audience with Herod to ask for peace, because they were depended on the king’s land for their food supply.

On the day set for this address he was dress in his royal attire and sitting on the throne to address them. Then someone shouted that a God was talking and not a man. Herod, as arrogant has he could be did not immediately gave praise to God and for this reason and angel of the Lord struck him down and he was eaten by worms and died. See how God can put you down if you uplift yourself. Don’t ever take the glory away from God, as God deserves all praise. God, I thank you for everything you have (and keep on doing) done in my life. Even when I am in very hard time of my life, I continuously see how you are guiding and protecting us. Keep us humble by never taking any of your praise or think that when other people boast about us, that we take that glory for ourselves.

Bible study on Acts of the Apostles – Chapter 8

Dear brothers and sisters,

In the Bible study on the 8th chapter of the Acts of the Apostles I will discuss:

  • The church scattered and persecuted
  • Philip in Samaria
  • Simon the sorcerer
  • Philip and the Ethiopian

The church scattered and persecuted

Here we read about Saul that approved of the killing. See how wicked people can be and kill people just for the fact that they serve our almighty Lord. But luckily we will see that Saul’s life is also a true blessed story of God’s amazing power.

Furthermore, it was not only enough to kill Stephen, but the devil hardened the heart of Saul and his men so much that they began persecuting all Christians. Know that if you decide to serve our Lord, that it is possible that you will be persecuted. Ask God for guidance and strength to stay true to Him in those time!

Philip in Samaria

Although the church was scattered by this persecution, see how these men did not let them stop them from sharing the Word of God. No matter what you are going through, don’t let anything stop you from do your work for God! One of them, called Philip, went to the town of Samaria and performed a lot of miracles in the name of God and people were amazed and healed. Amen!

Simon the sorcerer

Philip’s ministry in Samaria was not in vain, because the word of his healings / miracles through the guidance of God soon reached the apostles. They sent Peter and John to go there to see what was happening, but also to let the new Christians receive the Holy Spirit, because Philip only baptized them. This shows that it is vital for our life’s that we are not only baptized, but also receive the Holy Spirit. Don’t ever think that you do not need the Holy Spirit in your life. God makes it very clear that you cannot be a Christian and not be filled by the Holy Spirit.

At that time there was also a sorcerer called Simon performing all kinds of miracles, claiming that he received it from God. This is impossible, because God will never gives us wicked gifts! This Simon followed John and Peter and was amazed how God worked through them and offered them money to receive those gifts/miracles. They directly rejected this and told him that money would perish him. Luckily he understood that they only right thing to do was to ask God for forgiveness. He asked Peter and John to ask God to do it for Him. Although it is not mentioned how his life continued, I do believe that he needed to ask God for forgiveness himself and stop his wicked work. I truly hope that he came to God.

Philip and the Ethiopian

Here we read how God was really working through the life of Philip. He told Philip to go to a road to Gaza, where he would meet an Ethiopian eunuch on a chariot. And indeed on his way there he indeed met this person, so he started talking with him. If God tells you to do something specific than God will make sure that that person of thing is exactly where God tells Him.

This Eunuch was reading the prophecy of Isaiah and the Ethiopian asked him to teach him. We now see why God sent Philip to this man to let Him receive Christ and to be baptized. After this we also see that God doesn’t want us to stay somewhere for to long when He needs us somewhere else. So all of a sudden Philip was taken away by God to another place where he needed to continue his ministry for God!

Gospel of John

Bible study

Dear brothers and sisters,

Welcome back to the Bible study on the Gospel of John. I pray that God will also bless us while we are on this journey through the fourth and last of the Gospels. It has already been a great journey so far with doing the Bible studies over the first three Gospels and I ask God to also bless this Bible study on the Gospel of John. That He will guide us and show us all that we need to learn and know!

Thank you also for blessing this blog for this coming year!

In the 19th chapter of the Gospel of John we will discuss the following chapters:

  • Jesus sentenced to be crucified
  • The crucifixion of Jesus
  • The death of Jesus
  • The burial of Jesus

Jesus sentenced to be crucified

It always hurts me to read this part of the Bible, because even though Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent, he still did not have the courage to set him free. Even worse he pleaded for Jesus that He was innocent, but because the Pharisees were really pushing for Jesus to be crucified, he still gave in. Why? Because his own position was more important. For us it is important to even risk losing our position, if that means that we are helping an innocent person. A very powerful statement from Jesus is when He lets Pilate know that he only got his position and power from what he received from God, not by his own doing. We also need to know that our position and power in this world is only because of God, not because of our own actions. Thank God for every blessing you have received!

The crucifixion of Jesus

After the sentence of Pilate, Jesus was sent to Golgotha to be crucified together with two other men. During this time they took his clothes and divided it, and unknowingly they let a prophesy come through. This shows that nothing happens by coincidence, but fully to God’s plan!

Jesus’ mother had to witness this terrible and horrific view of her own son being crucified. When Jesus saw her, He told her and the apostle John that John was now her son. And from that moment on John took Mary in her home and took care of her like his mother.

The death of Jesus

Knowing that the prophesy would be fulfilled He asked for some drink and received it and afterwards stated: It is finished. And at that moment His life left his earthly body. Because of the Sabbath the next day the Pharisees wanted to make sure He was death before this special Sabbath. On their order started to break the legs of the first prisoner. And when they came to Jesus, they noticed that He was already death. For this reason they did not break his legs, but pierced Him. And again unknowingly they let a prophesy be fulfilled. Even though a person does not believe in God, He will still use them if that is to help Him to fulfill a plan in our life’s.

The burial of Jesus

After His death God made sure that Jesus received a proper burial. He sent Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Joseph gave Him is own tomb to be laid in. And Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes. They wrapped Him in linen together with these spices.

God will always make sure that He takes care of us even after our death!

Daily word for 13 March 2016 – John 12:24-25

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today I want to encourage you with the words from John 12:24-25 (NIV):

24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

In these verses our life is compared to wheat. When we are prepared to loose our (earthly) life, then through God our life will remain for eternal and after we are saved he will make sure that many seeds are produced in our life!

In the fifth chapter of the Gospel of John we will discuss the following chapters:

  • The healing at the pool
  • The authority of the Son
  • Testimonies about Jesus

The healing at the pool

At_The_Pool_of_Bethesda_lg

Jesus went near Jerusalem to a sheep pool, called Bethesda. At this pool a lot of disabled people used to lie. When Jesus came there was also a disabled man, which had been disabled for 38 years.

When Jesus saw him and learned that he had been this way for a long time, Jesus asked him if he wanted to get well. The disabled man replied that when he tried to get in the water that someone was always faster than Him. Then Jesus (because of his faith) said that the man should stand up and take his mat. And He was healed!

This healing took place on the Sabbath and the man walked away with his mat. He passed the Jewish leaders and instead of them being happy that he was healed were asking him why he was carrying his mat during Sabbath. See how wicked people can be that they find their own rules more important, than that people get healed. Later on the temple Jesus met the healed man again, and he told him to stop sinning or something worse will happen. This shows that one of the reason for sicknesses is actually our sins!

The authority of the Son

the authority of the son

Because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath the Jewish leaders began to persecute them. When they confronted Him, He told them that His father is also always working (also on the Sabbath). Not only working on the Sabbath, but also calling God His father (making himself equal to God). Then Jesus said the following:

“Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. 28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.

This is an amazing testimony by Jesus on God.

Testimonies about Jesus

he-lives-testimonies-of-jesus-christ-2015-01-01

John was sent also a testimony to Jesus, as Jesus cannot testify on himself. But the most important testimony is from God. And God testified in the Bible about Jesus even in the Old Testament, so that we already knew about Jesus and that it is our own choice to accept Jesus as the Son of God. But we can never claim that we did not know about Jesus, because God has testified on Him! And if we do not believe God, how can we believe Jesus? So we need to believe both God and Jesus!

God bless you!

Daily word for 24 February 2016 – 2 John 1:6

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today I want to encourage you with the words from 2 John 1:6 (NIV):

6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

God wants us to continuously walk in love. In this verse God tells us how we can walk in love, by being obedient to His command. If we truly love God, than it should be our desire to listen to His commands knowing that He knows best and wants only the best for us.

God bless you!

In the fourth chapter of the Gospel of John we will discuss the following chapters:

  • Jesus talks with a Samaritan woman
  • The disciples rejoin Jesus
  • Many Samaritans believe
  • Jesus heals an official’s son

Jesus talks with a Samaritan woman

Jesus talks with a samaritan woman

Jesus was going back tot Galilee and had to go through Samaria. During His travel He sat down at the well (which Jacob had given to his son Joseph) to rest. Around noon a Samaritan woman came and Jesus asked her for water. She immediately was surprised that a Jew would talked to her, as Jews and Samaritans did not associate (normally) with one another. Jesus answers her question with a counter question and ask her if she knows who He is and if she knows about His gift. And that she would have asked Him for His living water. Just like when we are not yet far into our faith, then we can ask questions that shows that were are not really understanding Gods word. The Samaritan woman says that He has no bucket or place to get this living water from. Jesus explains that from normal water we will get thirsty again, but from the living water we will never get thirsty again. Then she understands and want to have this living water! The living water is when we give our heart to the Lord!

Then Jesus shows that He knows everything about her and tells her of all the 5 man that she has been in a relationship with. Then she again understand that He is not just a random man. The continue to talk and now on worshipping. She tells on the (fake) gods they worship. In this conversation Jesus tells about the faith of the Jew and then the woman tells on the Savior from the Jews that is to come to explain all. And then He makes it known to hear that He is that one. How shocked and amazed will she have been when He made himself known. For us it also important to know that God is always around us and not a far away God. He literally can sit next to, so make sure to worship Him and to life your life according to His will, because before you know He will be back again!

The disciples rejoin Jesus

The disciples rejoin Jesus

Know the disciples came and saw Jesus talk with the Samaritan woman and by their harsh reaction they also showed the hostile relation between the two nations. Where the woman first did not see anything special in Jesus (and did not even know that it was Jesus), know she is telling other that He is the Messiah and that He knew everything about her. Let all that God has done in your life, be a reason to testify on exactly those things to others!

The disciples now urged Jesus to eat. And He told them that He already had food to eat. They did not understand and thought that someone else already brought some. Jesus explains that He is talking about doing the will of God. If we do the will of God then it will feed our soul spiritually. So we should do and desire to the will of God! God also tells us that He has and will do the work that we may reap from while we did not work for it. Thank God for this beautiful gift!

Many Samaritans believe

Many Samaritans believe

After Jesus meeting with the Samaritan woman a lot of other Samaritans came to faith in Jesus Christ. It is very beautiful to know that by reaching one person to accept the gospel it could very well be that that person is responsible for bringing even more people to faith!

Jesus heals an official’s son

healing-of-royal-official-artist-unknown-200x300x72

During Passover God was in Galilee and a man from Capernaum came to Him telling Him that his son was dying and he pleaded Jesus to help him. Jesus told him that people only believe when they see something, that is why He sent him home and during His way back it was informed that His son was healed! Amen!

God bless you all!

Bible study

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today we start with the Bible study on the Gospel of John. I pray that God will also bless us while we are on this journey through the fourth and last of the Gospels. It has already been a great journey so far with doing the Bible studies over the first three Gospels and I ask God to also bless this Bible study on the Gospel of John. In the first chapter of the Gospel of John we will discuss the following chapters:

  • The word became flesh
  • John the Baptist denies being the Christ
  • Jesus the lamb of God
  • Jesus’ first disciples
  • Jesus calls Philip and Nathanael

The word became flesh

The word became flesh

This first part of the chapter is very powerful! John starts his gospel by making it very clear that Jesus was not just “created” at that time, but that He has always been there! Jesus is the Word that became flesh. And here we read that the Word was there from the beginning, the Word was with God and that the Word is God! Wow, how beautiful to see that before the world was created, that Jesus was already there and His coming on earth was not just something that God decided on later on, but He already decided on it before the earth was even created!

After this introduction on Jesus, then John tells how John the Baptist was sent to gives Jesus praise, by letting us know that everything that was made, was made through Jesus. That life was in Him, and that the light was the light of men. And indeed He is the light in our life as He died for our sins and through Him we can come to the Father! And also He shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not understood it. This shows that He was to bring salvation on this earth, that is so dark through the presence of the devil here on earth. And the devil could not understand this big plan where Jesus came to save us by dying on the cross for our sins!

Now John the Baptist is introduced and it is made clear that he was sent by God as a witness to testify on Jesus, so that we all could know that Jesus finally came! It is beautiful how he gives all praise and attention to Jesus and not to Himself. Also John tells us that Jesus made the world, but the world did not recognize Him. That Jesus came to save us still did not follow Him. But the ones that did recognize Him and followed Him, He gave them the right to be called children of God (not born of natural descent, but of God!)

Here he describes that when Jesus was born, He became the Word that became flesh! Also where the Law came through Moses, the grace  and truth came through Jesus Christ!

John the Baptist denies being the Christ

John the Baptist Denies Being the Christ

In this chapter  we see the priest and Levites were with John the Baptist to question Him. They thought by his testimony that he claimed himself to be Jesus, but he made it very clear by stating: I am not the Christ!.

Then they were still confused and wanted to know who he was then. After they made a few guesses, he then let them know that he was the voice of one calling in the desert, “Make straight the way for the Lord!”. After his testimony they were still not satisfied and asked him why he was baptizing if he was not the Son of God nor Elijah, nor the prophet. Now he tells them that he baptizes in water, and that amongst them one stands they did not know. He came to tell about Jesus and how we did not see Him, while He was already amongst us! He tells them that Jesus was coming after him, and that He is so great that he could not even stand in his shadow. All the praise be to God!

Jesus the lamb of God

Jesus the Lamb of God

The next day John the Baptist was again baptizing people in water, when Jesus came. See how he already knew that Jesus was coming, while no one else recognized Him. This gave him the chance to give Jesus the introduction he deserved by saying: “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”. He tells that Jesus was already there before him, and that He surpassed him greatly. I love the humbleness of John the Baptist, because of his ministry he had every chance to take the honor and praise of the men around him, but he was very humble and had not desire to take the place of Jesus! Also John now tells that his ministry was to introduce Jesus and to baptize Him (a son of a priest in the line of Melchizedek that baptized Jesus as a priest!). From the moment He was baptized Jesus could start His ministry!

Then John the Baptist gave his testimony by stating: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.  I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.”

Jesus’ first disciples

Jesus' First Disciples

The next day John the Baptist was sitting there with two disciples, when Jesus came by. At that moment John said to them: Look this is the Lamb of God. How amazing that John continually gives Jesus the praise and not himself. We also need to take his example and be humble and in everything give God the honor of the things that we are blessed with in our lifes. After the introduction the 2 decided to follow Jesus. Jesus then turned around and asked them why they are following Him. They wanted to know where He was staying and Jesus told them to follow Him to know!  Andrew, Simon Peters brother, was one of the 2 following Him. After hearing Jesus, he went to find his brother Simon to tell him: “We have found the Messiah!”. And he took his brother to Jesus. Jesus wants us to not only follow Him ourselves, but to tell of Him and bring others also to faith in Him! Jesus now tells Simon that He from no on will be know as Cephas (which is translated in Peter).

Jesus calls Philip and Nathanael

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

The next day He was leaving Galilee, when he found Philip, He told him to follow Him. Jesus will also come to each and everyone of us, to tell us to follow Him. It is up to Him to listen to His request. By accepting this request you will make the best decision of our lifes!

Then Philip went and find Nathanael to tell him that they found the one Moses wrote about  in the Law, and about whom the propeths  also wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Then Nathanael asked Him if anything good can come from Nazareth. In that time people in Israel did not think high of Nazareth. I believe that God for this reason let Jesus grow up there, to even more show the mighty name of Jesus.

When Jesus saw both of them come He told about Nathanael that he is a true Israelite, of whom there is nothing false. Nathanael was surprised by this and Jesus explained him that He already saw him sitting under the fig tree, before Philip called Him. This shows that Jesus already knows us and can see us even before we are ready to know and accept Him! Then Jesus tells them that they will come to see a lot of amazing things that Jesus will do while on earth!

Thank you for reading this bible study. This first chapter of the Gospel of John is really amazing and so powerfull! Thank you God for blessing us with all you want us to learn during this Bible study!

Amen!

Daily encouraging word

Daily word for 3 October 2014

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today I want to encourage you with the words from Hosea 14:9, which says:

9 Who is wise? He will realize these things. Who is discerning? He will understand them. The ways of the LORD are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.

This verse shows how important it is to not be rebellious to God, but to trust on Him and walk in the ways of the Lord. God will bless your life if you set yourself open to follow Him!

Daily word 1 October 2014 – Romans 15:1-3

Daily encouraging word

Daily word for 1 October 2014

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today I want to encourage you with the words from Romans 15:1-3, which says:

1 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. 2Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. 3 For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”

As Christians we need to always put our own desires after helping out someone near you. Jesus showed this to die for us on the cross and by following this example of serving others, then you will see how this will not only bless the other person, but also your own life! God bless you all!
