Bible study on Acts of the Apostles – Chapter 17
Dear brothers and sisters,
In the Bible study on the 17th chapter of the Acts of the Apostles I will discuss:
- In Thessalonica
- In Berea
- In Athens
Paul and his companions continued their travels and reached the town of Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. So they attended 3 Sabbaths there. And again we see how a lot of Jews and Greeks were touched by the Word of God and started to believe in God. See how God will truly bless us if we do His work and that others through our work may learn to know God!
But yet again we see that if we do the work of God (even Jason that just provided a place to stay for Paul and Silas), that we will also be opposed by people that do not want to know God and openly reject them. Because they could not get to Paul and Silas they took Jason and some others and brought them before the city officials. But also here we see how God protected then and made sure that they were safe and could leave after posting a bond.
As soon as it was night believers made sure that Paul and Silas could leave Thessalonica safely and they travelled to Berea, where there was also a Jewish synagogue. Here we see that the people of this town were much noble and more open to the word of God. Not all places will have a lot of hostility towards God and His followers, so we can be there to strengthen others believers.
But unfortunately the people in Thessalonica learned of the success of God through Paul and Silas in Berea and they sent some people to again stir up the crowd against them. And yet again we see how God protected them by sending believers that safely got them out of Berea!
In Athens we see that Paul is very disturbed about the large number of idols there. Because of this he talked with the believers amongst the jews and the Greeks about this and he was brought before a group so he could discuss the fact that they were serving all this man-made idols instead of God. And after this discussion we can be pleased to see that even a place where the devil has so much idols and false religions that He has no problem to reach people and have them brought to faith.
